PairDrop, a community fork, keeps the browser workflow and adds pairing or a public room so two browsers can find each other on different networks.
That history is useful context. It does not change the everyday failure: if the other device is not discoverable the way the page expects, you are stuck.
Why the other device never appears
Snapdrop’s original discovery model groups devices that look like they share a network. That is a privacy-friendly choice. It is also why the page goes quiet in ordinary places.
Guest Wi-Fi and client isolation. Hotels, offices, schools, and cafes often block device-to-device traffic on purpose. Both browsers load. Neither sees the other circle. Full Wi-Fi bars do not mean the two devices can talk.
Two different networks. Your laptop is on home Wi-Fi. Their phone is on LTE. Or you are in different cities. There is no shared LAN for Snapdrop to use, so discovery has nothing to join.
No router at all. A train, a field shoot, a classroom with dead Wi-Fi. A website cannot discover a nearby phone if there is no local network and no internet for the signaling server.
Someone who will not keep a tab open. Browser-to-browser sharing needs both people present in the page. A parent, a client, or a classmate on a borrowed computer often will not do that — and asking them to “just open this site and wait” is already more support than the file is worth.
PairDrop’s pairing and rooms help when both people can open a browser and join the same room. That is still a two-tab workflow. It is not a nickname send, not an offline Android–iPhone path, and not a link the other person can open without installing anything or staying on a pairing page.

You do not have to name the transport. Nearby uses the LAN. Nickname covers different networks. The share link covers “no app.” Offline covers “no router.”
A few habits make the handoff cleaner. Send the folder you mean, not a pile of loose files, if you want the other side to keep your organization. On a big batch, prefer the same Wi-Fi when you have it — that is the fastest path. If you use a share link, say out loud that it is live now, not later tonight. And if a long transfer drops, let it resume instead of cancelling and starting over.
When Snapdrop is still enough
If you and the other device are on a working home network, and opening a website on both sides is easier than installing an app, the original Snapdrop idea is still a clean tool. Self-hosting the classic project, or using PairDrop on that same LAN, is a fair choice.

Why does Snapdrop not see my phone when we are both on Wi-Fi? You can both have Wi-Fi bars and still not share a reachable LAN. Guest networks and client isolation block the discovery Snapdrop uses. Different SSIDs, a phone on cellular, or two buildings have the same result: no circle.
